The biennial Rolex Fastnet Race is considered one of the world's classic ocean races. The 608-mile course is a test for skippers and crews with its tricky tidal currents and changeable weather conditions. The race is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, with the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Western Yacht Club, Plymouth.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club's classic event attracts in the region of 250 yachts every two years. The course will take the large fleet South West down the Solent, past the Needles and out into the English Channel. The headlands along the South Coast of England - Anvil Point, Portland Bill, Start Point, The Lizard, Lands End - must each be weathered on the way to the open ocean and the leg North West to the Fastnet Rock with it's mythical lighthouse. The return leg to Plymouth, via the Bishop Rock Lighthouse on the South side of the Scilly Isles, is just as demanding, as fatigue and competition take their toll.

Like no other race the Rolex Fastnet Race attracts every type of sailor and boat from just about every sailing country in the world. Sailing schools, corporate institutions, family owned and crewed cruiser-racers, dedicated amateurs, club sailors along with the hardened champions from the Grand Prix circuits, are all attracted to compete in the best known offshore race in the world. All come to enjoy the challenge of one of the trickiest and most demanding sporting events that an individual or a team can aspire to today.

As crew you must race over 300 miles with your intended Fastnet crew and yacht, during the 12 months prior to the race. The Fastnet is an endurance yacht race and is not easy. You need commitment and enthusiasm to do well. During the course of the training and the race itself you will develop and use all your sailing and communication skills and you will find the campaign a personal challenge, but also immensely satisfying when you complete it. Our aim is to make sure that everyone has fun and enjoys the challenge.

Our Fastnet Team 2007

Exact dates and timings for the 2009 campaign will appear hear later

Training weekend one May

Departed 1800 Friday in May 2007 / Return 1600 Sunday in May 2007

The weekend is spent looking at safety systems on the boat and the procedures to deal with incidents including fire fighting, flares, life rafts, life jackets, dismasting, storm jibs, man overboard, gas. The weekend is the first chance for the whole team to meet the skipper and each other. It is important that we can work well as a team and the dynamics of this were covered within the first weekend. Not forgetting the need to get some sailing in as well

Training weekend two June

Depart 1800 Friday in June 2007 / Return 1600 Sunday in June

This weekend concentrates on the yacht's sailing systems and includes reefing and spinnaker work. We cover some of the race regulations and rules and sail some distance over the course of the weekend to Weymouth and back for example. We also look at the way the boat is run whilst at sea for an extended period. Maintenance of the ship's log and chart work are also covered.

Seahorse Magazine Trophy

The RORC in conjunction with Cowes Combined Clubs (CCC) have created a further incentive for big boats to come to Cowes in 2009 by linking the Skandia Cowes Week Super-Zero Series, the RORC Channel Race and the Rolex Fastnet Race. The overall class winner, taking part in all three events, will be presented with the prestigious Seahorse Magazine Trophy.

The Super-Zero Series will comprise of three days racing based in Cowes – Friday in August (day before Skandia Cowes Week starts); Wednesday in August (Round-the-Island) and a short coastal race on Thursday in August.

The Super-Zero class has been created specifically for any boat wishing to race that is between 14 and 30 Metres LOA and with an IRC rating of 1.420 and upwards, whether it has a fixed or canting keel.

In addition, regardless of rating, owners/skippers of any boat over 14 metres LOA that has a canting keel and that wants to take part in Skandia Cowes Week will have to sail, in this new Super-Zero Series, unless they fix their keel amidships and re-rate accordingly.

ISAF safety all weather course

Prior to previous Fastnet races, the requirement for qualifying as an individual to enter the race was that you had to complete a first aid course and a sea survival course. This year this has been updated to an ISAF safety all weather course which includes both the Sea Survival, First Aid and an additional part to include heavy weather techniques and offshore racing. Phil is an RYA Sea Survival instructor and would normally run this element of the course whilst using a freelance instructor to cover the first aid element. A colleague of Phil's in the industry is going to run the ISAF course for us to attend collectively as a team. We are awaiting details of the dates of this course and will pass them on to you all as soon as possible. If you cannot make the suggested date, we will be able to arrange for you to join a course on your own to suit your requirements.

General administration

As you can see from the above details there is rather alot of information and if there is anything that you are unsure about please do not hesitate to contact any of the Solent Sail team.

Watches

When on board the boat, we may use a double or triple watch pattern with each watch being run by a watch leader under the overall responsibility of the skipper. For the Fastnet race itself the watch system may run as follows:-

Two watch pattern

The Seven watch pattern

Watch 1    0800hrs - 1200hrs Forenoon watch   0800hrs - noon
Watch 2    1200hrs - 1600hrs Afternoon watch   noon - 1600hrs
Watch 1    1600hrs - 2000hrs First dog watch  1600hrs - 1800hrs
Watch 2    2000hrs - 2300hrs Second dog watch 1800hrs -2000hrs
Watch 1    2300hrs - 0200hrs First watch    2000hrs - midnight
Watch 2    0200hrs - 0500hrs Middle watch    midnight - 0400hrs
Watch 1    0500hrs - 0800hrs Morning watch    0400hrs - 0800hrs

By running the watch system 4-on 4-off during the day and 3-on 3-off during the night or by using dog watchers, it means that the watches rotate each day and that you don't get stuck into the same times every night.

Food

All of the food on the boat will be supplied by Solent Sail. Could you please let us know if there is anything that you cannot eat.

Numbers

There are still places left on the yacht if you know anyone else that you think might enjoy taking part please ask them to contact us as soon as possible or feel free to pass this email onto them.

Experience

At present it would seem that everyone on the boat has a similar level of experience and that you all have similar aims in terms of what you want to get out of the experience. This seems to be that you want to increase your sailing experience in all areas and we can assure you that you will. Whether it is the safety aspects, sail trim, 'flying the kite', navigation, helming or the fundamentals of racing the yacht - all of these areas will be covered in depth.
